A group of traffic safety professionals from across the U.S. plan to unveil research that shows laws banning texting while driving could actually prompt a slight increase in road accidents, USA Today reports.
The findings, which will be revealed at a meeting in Kansas City, come during a national debate surrounding distracted driving.
President of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Adrian Lund told the news provider that "texting bans haven't reduced crashes at all."
The meeting of traffic safety professionals comes as 30 states and Washington D.C. have banned texting while driving, with 11 of the laws having been passed this year.
According to the government, 5,474 people were killed last year in the U.S. as a result of crashes involving distracted driving.
