Car Finance / Traffic deaths hit lowest number in 60 years![]() According to the Department of Transportation, traffic deaths in the U.S. are at a 60-year low, despite an increase in miles driven, USA Today reports. The number of people who died on the roads fell by 3,615, or 9.7%, to 33,808 deaths from 2008 to 2009, the lowest total since 33,186 people were killed in 1950, when the number of vehicles on the road was one-fifth of what it is today, according to department. Attributing the decline in traffic deaths to safer vehicles, increased seat belt use and stronger enforcement of drunk-driving laws, among other factors, executive director of the Governors’ Highway Safety Association, Barbara Hasha, called the numbers "unprecedented, historic progress." In addition to the 60-year low in traffic deaths, the chances of dying on the road are also the lowest they’ve ever been, the news source said. The number of deaths per 100 million miles traveled fell to 1.13 in 2009, even lower than the 1.26 number in 2008 despite the fact that Americans drove 0.2 percent more in 2009. For drivers looking to purchase a new vehicle and take advantage of this safe time to drive, using an online third-party auto finance provider can be helpful as these businesses can offer competitive rates on car loans and give the customer the ability to negotiate with cash at the dealership. |
